At 07:34 Colombia time on 10 August 2026 — 12:34 UTC — a moment-magnitude 7.4 earthquake ruptured about 110 km beneath the department of Chocó, near San José del Palmar. It was the strongest quake in Colombia in a decade, and the largest since the 1979 Tumaco event. Within days, authorities reported at least 294 dead, more than 3,900 injured, and hundreds still missing. Damage stretched from the Pacific foothills through the coffee axis to Cali — and shaking was felt in 32 departmental capitals, plus parts of Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela.

The story those numbers tell is less familiar. This was not a shallow coastal megathrust. It was a deep strike-slip rupture inside the subducting Nazca slab — the kind of earthquake that spreads severe shaking across a wide inland footprint.
USGS places the epicenter 5 km south of San José del Palmar at a depth of about 110 km. The Global CMT catalog lists Mw 7.5; Colombia’s geological survey reported a similar magnitude with a slightly shallower depth near 96 km. The mechanism was strike-slip at intermediate depth — rupture within the Nazca plate as it dives east beneath South America, not slip on the shallow trench interface that produced the great 1906 Colombia–Ecuador earthquake.
Shaking lasted on the order of two minutes. A peak ground acceleration near 0.43 g was recorded far from the epicenter at Jamundí, south of Cali. It is Colombia’s deadliest earthquake since the 1999 Armenia quake. Valle del Cauca — including Cali — and Risaralda — including Pereira — accounted for a large share of fatalities. Colombia’s government declared a national disaster and days of mourning, stood up a unified command, and surged soldiers, engineers, and rescue specialists into Cali, Pereira, Quibdó, and surrounding municipalities. Curfews in hard-hit cities aimed to keep rescue corridors clear. Domestic and international aid — search teams, field hospitals, financing from multilateral lenders, and private relief — continued through the first week as casualty and missing counts were still moving.
